Asian stock markets wrapped up the day with a mixed performance on Monday, March 10, as investors grappled with the implications of China's unexpected deflation and ongoing uncertainties surrounding U.S. tariff policies under President Trump.

In a surprising turn of events, China's Consumer Price Index (CPI) reported an annual decline of 0.7% in February, raising questions about the country's ambitious growth target of 5% for the year. This unexpected dip in inflation has sparked concerns about the effectiveness of Beijing's efforts to stimulate domestic demand.

The Hong Kong Hang Seng Index took a hit, dropping 1.85% to close at 23,783.49 points, primarily weighed down by a slump in technology stocks. Conversely, Japan's Nikkei Index managed to gain 0.38%, finishing at 37,028.27 points. This uptick came as the yield on Japan's 10-year government bonds (JGB) reached its highest level since October 2008, climbing 5.5 basis points to 1.575%.

In South Korea, the Kospi Index saw a modest increase of 0.27%, closing at 2,570.39 points, while Taiwan's Taiex Index experienced a slight decline of 0.52%, settling at 22,459.15 points.

Investor sentiment remains cautious, heavily influenced by the recent volatility in global markets and the looming threat of new tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from the U.S., set to take effect on Wednesday, March 12.

In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite Index fell by 0.19%, ending the day at 3,366.16 points, while the Shenzhen Composite Index remained nearly unchanged, with a marginal increase of 0.01% to 2,080.57 points.

Meanwhile, in Oceania, the Australian stock market broke a four-day losing streak, with the S&P/ASX 200 rising by 0.18% to close at 7,962.30 points.

As the global economic landscape continues to shift, all eyes will be on how these developments unfold and their potential impact on markets worldwide. Stay tuned for more updates as we navigate these uncertain times together!
